“NetApps Enabling Application-Layer Analytics for Vertical IoT Industry” Journal Paper

The EVOLVED-5G journal paper by Lenovo partner (Emmanouil Pateromichelakis, Dimitrios Dimopoulos, Apostolis Salkintzis), entitled “NetApps Enabling Application-Layer Analytics for Vertical IoT Industry” was accepted in the IEEE Internet of Things Magazine, Volume 5, Issue: 4.
This article presents the concept of vertical application enablement which is a framework that enables the integration of vertical IoT apps within future mobile networks. The vertical application enablement provides a toolbox of value-add services, realized via so-called Network Applications (NetApps), that form an optimization and translation layer, which eases the interaction between vertical IoT apps and mobile networks. The importance of data management at the telco cloud platforms, and in particular the data collection and analytics enablement, necessitates a new category of NetApps which aims at supporting cross-domain integrated analytics to optimize end to end application performance, In this article, we review the various vertical application enablement frameworks, and we consider more specifically the NetApps that can be used to expose their services/capabilities. We also discuss the Application Data Analytics Enablement Services (ADAES) that can provide app-layer analytics services to vertical IoT apps, and we present its architecture, capabilities, and its current standardization status in 3GPP. In addition, we present an innovative implementation of analytics enablement through NetApps, which enables vertical IoT clients to select the best vertical IoT server instance, which is expected to provide the best performance.

The NetApps Certification Environment for 5G and beyond Vertical Ecosystems: The EVOLVED-5G Approach, Conference Paper at IEEE GLOBECOM 2022

The conference paper entitled “The NetApps Certification Environment for 5G and beyond Vertical Ecosystems: The EVOLVED-5G Approach” has been accepted in the IEEE GLOBECOM 2022.

Certification is the means to promote excellence through adherence to best practices, and ensure the appropriate security and transparency, in alignment to regulations set by the market and (various levels of) administrations. In the mobile telecommunications domain, certification for the radio equipment and user terminals has been a fundamental practice. With the 3GPP5G specifications, a novel core network (5GC) model comes to promote dynamic, open 5G services and enable network programmability through standard APIs unlocking the network intelligence to the vertical application needs. A consequence of this “openness” is the mandate for supplements in the established practices of the mobile network operators (MNOs) to include beyond device also software conformance and quality assessment certification. This study describes the work carried out by EU Horizon 2020 EVOLVED-5G project, to define the relevant certification framework for the NetApps, a novel concept introduced as an enabler for the 5G adoption from the vertical industries. The paper goes beyond the definition of the key constructs for the appropriate certification creation process, and explores the technical characteristics of the execution environment to support the certification auditing in an effective, automated and repeatable manner.

“NetApp: Opening up 5G and beyond networks” White Paper

The 5GPP white paper entitled “NetApp: Opening up 5G and beyond networks” is now available! You may find it online along with EVOLVED-5G contributions here: https://5g-ppp.eu/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/5G-PPP-Software-Network-White-Paper-V9.pdf

As part of the 5G-PPP Initiative, the Software Network Working Group prepared this white paper to demystify the concept of the Network Applications. In fact, the Network Application ecosystem is more than the introduction of new vertical applications that have interaction capabilities. It refers to the need for a separate middleware layer to simplify the implementation and deployment of vertical systems on a large scale. Specifically, third parties or network operators can contribute to Network Applications, depending on the level of interaction and trust. Different implementations have been conducted by the different projects considering different API types and different level of trust between the verticals and the owner of 5G platforms.
