European SME Expertise in 5G and Beyond 2023

The 6G-IA, which is proud to have more than 110 SME members, is driving 6G research in Europe. Together with the European Commission, the 6G-IA is running the 6G Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU). This major research program will invest at least 1.8 billion Euros over its eight-year timeframe and aims to bring technological leadership to Europe in the vital area of 6G. In the context of the SNS-JU and the previous 5G research program 5G-PPP, the 6G-IA has been active in trying to ensure a high SME participation. This has become a key goal of both partnerships because SMEs are recognized as the catalyst for innovation. Their ability for “out of the box” thinking and their agility to rapidly develop and test ideas in multiple sectors, have been important assets in the industrial digitization of the so-called vertical industries. Joining forces between SMEs and the key ICT companies has been one of the key factors driving the overall success of the 5G PPP programme.

EVOLVED-5G Service Package Video

The EVOLVED-5G Service Package is a software bundle to facilitate developers for the creation, verification, validation and certification of Network Applications. It is Virtual Machine (VM) as a downloadable package to be installed for local use. The EVOLVED-5G Service Package ease and allows developers to initiate in the development of Network Applications. Within this VM, the developer can interact with the Dummy Network Application to understand how a Network Application does the network communication with NEF and TSN through CAPIF. The EVOLVED-5G Service Package includes: 1) An SDK including libraries and a Command Line Interface (CLI) tool, that enables developers for:a) The creation of a Network Application repository where they can create their own code / Network Application by making use of the SDK libraries.b) The generation of Network Applications from a template using the CLI tool. c) Verify, validate and certify in a virtualized environment using the CLI tool by launching different pipelines, the Network Application interaction with NEF and the TSN service exposure through CAPIF. 2) Dummy Network Application, an example of Network Application that illustrates the behavioural functionalities that a Network Application must have in the EVOLVED-5G environment. Developers can view and change the code of the Dummy Network Application to create their own. They can also run the different verification pipelines against the Dummy Network Application. 3) NEF services, that emulate the Northbound APIs of 3GPP’s Network Exposure Function (NEF) so developers can check the Network Application interaction with NEF. Three APIs have been implemented to be used by Network Apps: Location, Connection monitoring and QoS Awareness. 4) CAPIF services implement the core function of the Common API Framework, specified in 3GPP Rel. 17. By using these services, Network Applications are aligned with the related standard, i.e., they adopt an interoperable and secure way to interact with APIs exposed by API providers that reside at the mobile network (e.g., NEF). 5) TSN Frontend, that exposes an API to request network configurations related to TSN and deterministic communication. There is a set of pre-defined configurations which can then be customized by developers. Developers can download the VM from a link shared in the Wiki (https://wiki.evolved-5g.eu/) and import it to their preferred hypervisor. This video acts as guidelines to the installation process. The 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (PPP) Programme comprises 93 projects (listed in Section “Editors and Champions”) organized in three distinctive phases, namely specification, development and experimentation/pilots. Almost all PPP projects have now completed their work, with few remaining Phase 3 projects running until beginning of 2024. The 93 PPP projects achieved outstanding results and impact, as it has been regularly highlighted in the PPP Programme (https://5g-ppp.eu/) and the corresponding project websites. The PPP projects have created a plethora of advanced European telecommunication solutions. They also ensured an extremely high momentum and dynamism for the actual trials of these solutions as well as the further development of 5G systems on the road towards 6G networks, including 6G Smart Networks and Services (SNS) Joint Undertaking (JU). The broader context and overall panoramic perspective of the progress and achievements that the 5G Infrastructure PPP Programme has produced can be directly accessed on the PPP website, in the PPP Verticals Cartography, through specific White Papers and via the multiple webinars organized by the 5G PPP at the Programme and projects levels. Given the vast amount of work being carried out by the portfolio of 5G Infrastructure PPP projects, this PPP Projects Heritage Brochure and related Heritage Figure are summarizing the interconnections between the PPP projects under three specific categories: 1. Projects follow-up (captured in orange solid lines in the figure), 2. Components use/re-use (captured in light blue dashed lines in the figure) and 3. ICT-19 Verticals Pilots / ICT-17 Platforms use (captured in dark blue dashed lines in the figure). The work is consolidating and concluding the initial work achieved with the PPP Heritage Figure Version n°1 released in June 2020 (https://5g-ppp.eu/5g-ppp-heritage/) and that was one of the PPP “Reference” Figures, widely used to depict the Programmatic connections between projects.

“Innovation Trends in I4.0 enabled by 5G and Beyond Networks” White Paper

The 5GPPP White Paper entitled “Innovation Trends in I4.0 enabled by 5G and Beyond Networks” is now available! Access it and learn all about EVOLVED-5G contributions here: https://5g-ppp.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Innovation-Trends-in-I4.0-enabled-by-5G-and-Beyond-Networks.pdf

First of all, this whitepaper provides a 360-degree perspective on I4.0 design principles, drivers and trends – most of them supported or even directly enabled by 5G-, that stems directly from the sustained and tight cooperation of major I4.0 leaders with key industrial and academic contributors to 5G development across a handful of research and innovation projects backed specifically by the EU 5G-PPP (5GPublic Private Partnership) programme. Secondly, a further step into segmenting, staging and assessing the applicability of 5G and beyond technologies for the short and mid-term challenges of I4.0 is taken, by giving directly the voice to the I4.0 stakeholders engaged in these 5G-PPP projects and, then, extracting from their inputs collective highlights that could serve as a compass for focusing new ecosystem-based initiatives and for drawing new research policies in the field. The survey (see Annex II) conducted by this joint initiative has polled on the competitive advantages, applications and areas of interest for the adoption of 5G in their plans, the expected adoption and transition timelines, the identification of critical 5G network services for their applications, the importance of human-machine collaboration, the investment model that best matches their industry needs, the key requirements and expectations for non-public 5G networks, and the requirements for security and privacy, having been answered by eleven distinct responders holding key responsibility in the I4.0 roadmap within their organizations. Thirdly, a glimpse into some key evolving and new disruptive technological aspects around 5G evolution to 6G (Sixth Generation), such as Deterministic Networking, Non-Public Networks and Digital Twining, that are already being addressed by – among other EU 6G IA (Industry Association) SNS (Smart Network and Services) projects- Predict6G project is included, with the ambition of stretching the line of sight of this report into longer term synergies between I4.0 with 5G. Finally, the report also tries to derive from the experience and learnings about the influence of ecosystem dynamics, regulation, exploitation and sustainability of results, and public research policies and programmes, an outlook into the future on the expected evolution in such aspects along with a few suggestions and recommendations that could facilitate the successful completion of the journey of adoption of 5G for I4.0.

“5G and B5G NEF exposure capabilities towards an Industrial IoT use case” Conference Paper

EVOLVED-5G conference paper entitled “5G and B5G NEF exposure capabilities towards an Industrial IoT use case” is now available!
Given the large amount of data usage and diverse business models in the current market, 5G and B5G networks are forecasted to manage and support a variety of new business solutions with respect to high-performance needs, while also allowing existing services to be enhanced and optimized. One effective way to accomplish this is by fully utilizing the network’s openness and programmability in terms of both business and technical level coordination. A cornerstone to the above mentioned premise is the implementation of the Network Exposure Function (NEF) interfaces that are required in order for NEF to expose the standardized APIs. In this context, the paper presents the concept of network exposure via a simulation tool that enables application developers to experiment with the northbound APIs under a simulated and configurable environment. Moreover, the required software that interacts with the exposed APIs, namely the Network Application, is introduced and validated on top of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine to Machine (M2M) use case, which falls under the scope of the Factory of the Future and Industry 4.0 concept.
