European SME Expertise in 5G and Beyond 2023

The 6G-IA, which is proud to have more than 110 SME members, is driving 6G research in Europe. Together with the European Commission, the 6G-IA is running the 6G Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU). This major research program will invest at least 1.8 billion Euros over its eight-year timeframe and aims to bring technological leadership to Europe in the vital area of 6G. In the context of the SNS-JU and the previous 5G research program 5G-PPP, the 6G-IA has been active in trying to ensure a high SME participation. This has become a key goal of both partnerships because SMEs are recognized as the catalyst for innovation. Their ability for “out of the box” thinking and their agility to rapidly develop and test ideas in multiple sectors, have been important assets in the industrial digitization of the so-called vertical industries. Joining forces between SMEs and the key ICT companies has been one of the key factors driving the overall success of the 5G PPP programme.

6G RESEARCH GETS A 130 MILLION EUR EU FUNDING BOOST IN EUROPE

The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) is pleased to unveil the selection of its new 27 research, innovation, and trial projects that will commence operations as of 1 January 2024. These projects represent a significant stride towards advancing smart networks and services, offering breakthrough innovations, experimental platforms and large-scale trials, driving world-class research and shaping the world’s digital connected future.

Erzsébet Fitori, the new SNS JU Executive Director, announced the newly selected projects today in her keynote at the 5G Techritory 2023 event.

In its second phase, the SNS JU is moving towards more detailed design and system optimisation while integrating micro-electronics and sustainability as core dimensions. The aim is to build first-class 6G technology capacities across Europe and to strongly contribute to standardisation efforts. With an EU budget of €130 million, this second call will further support and accelerate ground-breaking research in 6G technologies throughout Europe and beyond. International collaboration is key to achieving a globally accepted 6G standard. One project that was selected focuses on EU-US research cooperation.

The SNS JU now counts a portfolio of 62 research, innovation, and trials projects, with 27 new projects selected following the evaluation of proposals submitted under the SNS JU second call. The 27 projects announced today launch the second phase of the SNS Roadmap, which will be further expanded with the future 3rd and 4th SNS JU Calls and the resulting projects that will kickstart their activities within 2025 and 2026 respectively. The launch of the new projects follows the formal decision of the SNS JU Governing Board. 5GPPP Newsletter #32

The latest 5GPPP Newsletter is now available! The year 2024 will mark the end of the 5G PPP, the aim of which was to secure Europe’s leadership in specific areas where Europe is strong or where there was potential to create new markets, such as smart cities, e-health, intelligent transport, education or entertainment and media. The 5G PPP has helped reinforce the European industry to successfully compete on global markets and open new innovation opportunities. EuCNC & 6G Summit 2024

The 2024 EuCNC & 6G Summit builds on putting together two successful conferences in the area of telecommunications: EuCNC, in its 33rd edition of a series, supported by the European Commission; the 6G Summit, in its 6th edition, originated from the 6G Flagship programme in Finland, one of the very first in its area. The conference is sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) and the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP) and supported by the European Commission. The conference addresses various aspects of Beyond 5G/6G communications systems and networks.  It brings together cutting-edge research and world-renown industries and businesses, globally attracting in the last years more than 700 delegates from more than 40 countries all over the world, to present and discuss the latest results, and an exhibition with more than 50 exhibitors, for demonstrating the technology developed in the area, namely within research projects from EU R&I programmes.

Deliverable 5.6 “Network App Certification andRelease to Marketplace (Final)”

The ultimate objective of EVOLVED-5G project and WP5, more specifically, is to Certify the Network Applications developed in the Project and release them to the Marketplace. Thus, the current document “Network App Certification and Release to Marketplace (Final)” provides details on the Certification Process defined in EVOLVED-5G It outlines the establishment of a Certification Pipeline for implementation and delves into the subsequent Release of certified Network Applications to the Marketplace Moreover, the document provides details on each of the certification tests implemented and the tools used to build these tests, the generation of the Certification Report and the integration with the Open Repository, and finally, describes the lifecycle of the Network Applications in the Marketplace, describing the Release process, the
upgrades and deprecation of Network Applications.

3GPP SA6 Meeting

During 3GPP SA6 last November, EVOLVED-5G project was mentioned during 3GPP presentation as a CAPIF adoption & promotion initiative.
This is an exceptional recognition from the 3GPP community about the project’s contribution in embracing CAPIF!

EVOLVED-5G Service Package Video

The EVOLVED-5G Service Package is a software bundle to facilitate developers for the creation, verification, validation and certification of Network Applications. It is Virtual Machine (VM) as a downloadable package to be installed for local use. The EVOLVED-5G Service Package ease and allows developers to initiate in the development of Network Applications. Within this VM, the developer can interact with the Dummy Network Application to understand how a Network Application does the network communication with NEF and TSN through CAPIF. The EVOLVED-5G Service Package includes: 1) An SDK including libraries and a Command Line Interface (CLI) tool, that enables developers for:a) The creation of a Network Application repository where they can create their own code / Network Application by making use of the SDK libraries.b) The generation of Network Applications from a template using the CLI tool. c) Verify, validate and certify in a virtualized environment using the CLI tool by launching different pipelines, the Network Application interaction with NEF and the TSN service exposure through CAPIF. 2) Dummy Network Application, an example of Network Application that illustrates the behavioural functionalities that a Network Application must have in the EVOLVED-5G environment. Developers can view and change the code of the Dummy Network Application to create their own. They can also run the different verification pipelines against the Dummy Network Application. 3) NEF services, that emulate the Northbound APIs of 3GPP’s Network Exposure Function (NEF) so developers can check the Network Application interaction with NEF. Three APIs have been implemented to be used by Network Apps: Location, Connection monitoring and QoS Awareness. 4) CAPIF services implement the core function of the Common API Framework, specified in 3GPP Rel. 17. By using these services, Network Applications are aligned with the related standard, i.e., they adopt an interoperable and secure way to interact with APIs exposed by API providers that reside at the mobile network (e.g., NEF). 5) TSN Frontend, that exposes an API to request network configurations related to TSN and deterministic communication. There is a set of pre-defined configurations which can then be customized by developers. Developers can download the VM from a link shared in the Wiki (https://wiki.evolved-5g.eu/) and import it to their preferred hypervisor. This video acts as guidelines to the installation process.
