European SME Expertise in 5G and Beyond 2023

The 6G-IA, which is proud to have more than 110 SME members, is driving 6G research in Europe. Together with the European Commission, the 6G-IA is running the 6G Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU). This major research program will invest at least 1.8 billion Euros over its eight-year timeframe and aims to bring technological leadership to Europe in the vital area of 6G. In the context of the SNS-JU and the previous 5G research program 5G-PPP, the 6G-IA has been active in trying to ensure a high SME participation. This has become a key goal of both partnerships because SMEs are recognized as the catalyst for innovation. Their ability for “out of the box” thinking and their agility to rapidly develop and test ideas in multiple sectors, have been important assets in the industrial digitization of the so-called vertical industries. Joining forces between SMEs and the key ICT companies has been one of the key factors driving the overall success of the 5G PPP programme.

FOGUS Network Application

The Fogus Innovations 5G add-on application extends the capabilities of a Security Information and Event Management system to include 5G devices in the monitoring process. The application was successfully deployed and tested at Athens 5G platform in NCSR Demokritos campus by FOGUS and NCSRD partners on Thursday 23rd March 2023. “Network Programmability Framework for Vertical Applications in the Beyond 5G Era” Paper Presentation at EuCNC 2022

Harilaos Koumaras EVOLVED-5G technical manager presented the conference paper entitled “Network Programmability Framework for Vertical Applications in the Beyond 5G Era on June 9th 2022. Programmability in 5G Core (5GC) enables operators to open telecom network capabilities and services to third-party developers, allowing them to establish innovative network-aware vertical applications. This openness is materialized through the 5G Service Based Architecture (SBA) that exposes the network intelligence to the vertical applications through standardized Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Building upon the application empowerment that the programmable APIs can offer unleashing new business potentials, the ecosystem of Network Applications (NetApps) emerges to stand as a facilitating middle-ware between the network and applications. This study presents the architectural and implementation aspects of an open all-encompassing framework for NetApps considering their entire spanning from their development to their final publication in the market. 5G Forum 2022

EVOLVED-5G project, took part in the 5G FORUM 2022 through a dedicated special session entitled “EVOLVED-5G & 5G USE CASES INNOVATION”. In this special session organized by EVOLVED-5G on the fourth day of the forum on 12th of May three dedicated presentations took place. Telefonica and University of Malaga represented EVOLVED-5G with the presentations entitled ” “EVOLVED-5G CAPIF core function”, along with other 5G uses cases that TID is implementing also with UMA in Málaga.”, “EVOLVED-5G Netapp ecosystem, 5G programmability and the Netapp lifecycle” and “EVOLVED-5G agricultural use case and Netapp ” to demonstrate that EVOLVED-5G activities go even beyond i4.0.

“5G Programmability” Joint Training Workshop by EVOLVED-5G and the Computer Science department of Athens Metropolitan College

The “5G Programmability” Joint Training Workshop by EVOLVED-5G and the Computer Science department of Athens Metropolitan College took place on the 21st and 22 of March 2022. The first day of the workshop attracted 100 visitors and the second day almost 80 visitors. During this first day of the event, insights about the 5G framework and the context of the EVOLVED-5G project has been shared by our technical manager Harilaos Koumaras. Also, details about NetApps, APIs and the EVOLVED-5G’s NEF EMULATOR were shared by Dimitrios Fragkos, Anastasios Gogos and George Makropoulos, research associates of NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”​. During the second day of the event, insights about the NetApp ecosystem of EVOLVED-5G project has been shared by our deputy technical manager Dimitris Tsolkas (Fogus Innovations and Services P.C.). Also EVOLVED-5G partners, Theoni Dounia (INFOLYSiS), Luka Koršič (INTERNET INSTITUTE Ltd) and Andreas Oikonomakis (Zortenet) shared details about the EVOLVED-5G use cases and NetApps. The EVOLVED-5G programme closed by Christina Skoubridou who shared all the information behind the creation to the EVOLVED-5G community!
